Shortly after discovering popupportal.com, a forum for camping trailers (aka, popups or “pups” for short), I found robertssales.com, an excellent web site for a dealer out of Colorado that specializes in camping trailers.
Roberts Sales has a great set of articles about camping trailers including Choosing the Right Type of Camper and Choosing the Right [Popup] Camper, which were helpful to me. In particular the article about choosing the right type of camper offers an unbiased view of the tradeoffs between different camper types. It includes the following graphic for visualizing the tradeoffs across camper styles side-by-side.
Another great article on the site is titled Our Thoughts, which provides summaries of different floorplans and models. Each model is grouped into three broad categories including good all-around campers, more specialized, and niche, with each category appealing to a smaller subset of the market. Roberts only sells Forest River popups but other manufacturers, like Jayco, offer similar floorplans so the summaries can generally be applied to other brands as well.
The site also provides list prices along with sale prices for all models that Roberts sells along with an explanation of why they don’t haggle. So this gives you a ballpark sense for the discount you should get over MSRP (i.e., more than 20% and probably less than 30%) if buying from another dealer especially if you’re looking at Flagstaff or Rockwood (both Forest River brands) models.
If you’re in the market for a popup or are just interested in learning about campers, spend some time exploring the great content at robertssales.com. You’ll almost certainly pick up some new camper knowledge. And thanks to the folks at Roberts Sales for providing such a great resource on popup campers!
